Philippines, My Philippines (Remembering the Past)

The Philippines is a republic country that lies in the dynamic region of Southeast Asia. It is endowed with natural resources and considered as one of the riches biodiversity in the world. It is also the second largest archipelago after Indonesia with 7,107 islands. The three largest islands are Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
The country's earlier inhabitants were the negritos - followed by the Austronesian people. They brought with them the Malay, Hindu, and Islamic influences. Perhaps among all, the Chinese influences are the longest because they remain and still evident even to this day.

Manila is the capital city and was a former hub of the Manila-Acapulco galleon trade during the Spanish era when it was discovered by Ferdinand Magellan in 1521. The archipelago was named Las Islas Filipinas in honor of Philip II of Spain in 1543 by Ruy Lopez de Villalobos. It was ruled by Spain as a colony for more than 300 years.

After the Spanish-American War the Americans emerged victorious and got hold of the country for many years. The Japanese then occupied the country between 1942-1945 in the battle known to all as World War II. However, they were defeated by the Allied Powers headed by the Americans under the command of General Douglas MacArthur. After the war the Philippines gained its independence that is enjoyed by everyone up until today.
